New routes, new buses

The Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) has introduced 33 new buses on 19 new routes covering various parts of the city and suburbs. The new buses were added to the existing fleet of more than 3,000 buses at a function held on March 31. The Chief Minister Jayalalithaa flagged of the fleet which included MTC and State Express Transport Corporation buses.

A senior official of the MTC said that 19 new routes have been incorporated in addition to the 768 existing routes; nine bus routes have been extended, two routes have been changed, one service has been increased and additional buses have been added on two routes. All these steps were undertaken by the MTC based on representations received from Ministers and MLAs of the assembly.

The 19 new routes are: 29J operated from Madhavaram to Mandaveli via Moolakadai, Shivashamugapuram, Purasawalkam, KMC, Gemini and Mylapore; 38J from Madhavaram to T. Nagar via Moolakadai, Vallalar Nagar, Parrys, Anna Salai, DMS and Panagal Park; 20J from Ayapakkam TNHB Colony to Chennai Mofussil Bus Terminus (CMBT) via Ayapakkam, Ambedkar Nagar, Ambattur Industrial Estate, Wavin and Thirumangalam; 505P from Red Hills to Periyapalayam covering Alamathy, Poochi Athipedu, Thamaraipakkam and Vadamadurai; 21J from Velachery to Guduvanchery via Keelkattalai, Medavakkam and East Tambaram; 66S from Sholinganallur to Poonamallee through Thorapakkam, Eechangadu, Pallavaram, Kundrathur, Mangadu and Kumananchavadi; D51 Extension from Seethalapakkam TNHB Colony to High Court via Medavakkam, Pallikaranai, Velachery, Saidapet and Anna Salai; 221H from Central to Kelambakkam thrugh Anna Salai and Kotturpuram; 572K from Ambattur I.E. to Kizhmanur via Dunlop, Avadi, Thiruninravur, Veeraraghavapuram and Bharathur; 580P from Poonamallee to Periyapalayam via Thirumazhisai, Thiruninravur, Vadamadurai; 65R – Ambattur I.E. to Ayyappanthangal through Ambattur and Kattupakkam; 500J – Velachery to Chengalpet via East TAmbaram, Vandalur and Guduvanchery; 553A – CMBT to Sriperumbudur via Nerkundram, Maduravoyal, Poonamallee and Chembarampakkam; J70 – J.J. Nagar West to Guindy Industrial Estate via Thirumangalam, Vadapalani and Ekkattuthangal; 66J – Pallavaram to Poonamallee covering Pammal, Sankar Nagar, Thiruneermalai and Kundrathur; 52J – Pozhichalur to Durga Nagar via Pallavaram and Chromepet; 156E – Ennore to CMBT via Tiruvottiyur, Vallalar Nagar, Central and Aminjikarai; 157E – Ennore to Red Hills via Tiruvottiyur, Tondiarpet, Korukkupet and Moolakadai and 5R from Saidapet to Velachery via Guindy Race Course, NGO Colony, Vanuvampet and Velachery MRTS.

The nine bus routes that have been extended are: 57D - Broadway to Poochi Atthipedu, 248A - Vallalar Nagar to Kallikuppam, M52 Extn. – Pozhichalur to Guduvanchery, M18 Extn. – Tambaram to Guduvanchery, 55 Extn. – Tambaram to Mannivakkam, 1J – Triplicane to Tiruvottiyur, M54V – Poonamallee to Vepampattu, M52P – Pozhichalur to Velachery and 21L – Broadway to Velachery.

The MTC has increased buses on bus route nos. 70W and A21.
